Product details
The main character of the play is one of the most fascinating women of India, Princess Mirabai, who lived in the 16th century. She broke all the conventions of aristocracy to wander the land homeless and without possessions in the name of her beloved God Krishna, for whom she composed and sang a multitude of songs. To this day, her orally transmitted songs are famous and vibrant in India. Dilip Kumar Roy (1897-1980) and Indira Devi (1920-1997) wrote "The Beggar Princess" as a historical play. It brings to life Mirabai's journey from her sheltered childhood through her arranged marriage, her precarious existence as a God-loving visionary in a world dominated by rigid courtly rules, and her radical escape from that world. The play is filled with poetry: at every stage of the drama, Mirabai expresses her feelings in a lyrical, pure, clear, and touching manner.
