Following in the footsteps of Marco Polo, who traveled through this section of the Silk Road on his world-famous journey to China, the author undertook two trips half a century ago, accompanied by a filmmaker, through the Wakhan to the high plateaus of the Afghan Pamirs, where she met the local Kyrgyz people, whose children called her Kisil Ayak - Red Sock - because of her red woolen socks. She returned with a small wolf, a farewell gift from Prince Rahman Kol Khan. This personal, exciting, and ethnologically interesting travelogue takes the reader to a little-known region of Afghanistan and provides insight into a country that was still peaceful and untouched by the ravages of war at that time.
