During the Yugoslav War in the 1990s, German corvette captain Karsten Mielke unexpectedly finds himself in the staff of the NATO forces headquarters in Sarajevo. He has the opportunity to observe the work of the international staff and contribute to it until he must return earlier than planned, as a chapter from his own past catches up with him.
