Why is it so difficult to be faithful? Does my partner really hold a central place in my heart? What role do our past partners and our parents play in this? What happens when children are involved? Can I be faithful to both my partner and myself at the same time? Generally, we believe that a breach of fidelity destroys a relationship. However, this does not have to be the case. If partners have the courage to engage honestly with themselves and each other, this 'betrayal' can become a first step towards a deeper understanding of one another. The author sensitively illustrates, especially through the example of romantic relationships, under what conditions partners can remain faithful to each other and when they may need to betray one another. It is fascinating how the resulting conflict of fidelity can also be applied to familial, social, and political relationships.
