Anna is a shy girl who usually spends her time alone. She enjoys reading and dreams of having a pet. On St. Nicholas Day, she finds the book "Tom Sawyer" in her boot. Something is not quite right with this book, and she notices it immediately. After a few pages, she discovers the talking bookworm Max inside it. She quickly becomes friends with him, as Max knows an endless number of stories that he can now share with Anna.
