It is important to remember that its establishment was the work of Helmut Holtzhauer. Helmut Holtzhauer (1912 - 1973) served as the General Director of the National Research and Memorial Sites of Classical German Literature from 1954 to 1973, and was Vice President and then President of the Goethe Society in Weimar. In his diary entries from 1958 to 1973, he recorded work tasks, reflections on current political events, travel impressions, and summaries of conversations with a variety of contemporaries both within and outside the GDR.
