Without a doubt, Leon Trotsky (1879-1940) is one of the most significant political figures of the first half of the 20th century. He was elected chairman of the Petrograd Soviet during the revolutions of 1905 and 1917. Together with Lenin, he was at the forefront of the October Revolution. He organized the Red Army in the victorious civil war against the Whites and foreign intervention. The rise of the Stalin faction led to his exclusion from political leadership positions and ultimately to his exile to Alma-Ata and his deportation to Prinkipo (Turkey) in 1929. The last decade before his assassination in 1940 was marked by exile and displacement, but also by an unyielding struggle against fascism and Stalinism. However, Trotsky was not only a political leader but also an exceptionally productive writer. In addition to politics and history, he dealt with questions of culture and everyday life. In Volume I of his standard work, Pierre Broué, editor of the French Trotsky works edition, provides a comprehensive overview of the life and activities of the Russian revolutionary up to 1929, while Volume II covers the period of exile until his assassination in 1940.
