Perhaps those who have lost their seemingly secure place in life early on will never truly feel at home anywhere again—unless they can rewrite what is missing. This is the case for Uwe Johnson. His life journey begins in 1934 on the Pomeranian island of Wollin and leads through Anklam in Vorpommern, Recknitz and Güstrow in Mecklenburg, then via Rostock and Leipzig to West Berlin in 1959. After a stay in New York, this journey comes to an early end on the Isle of Sheppey in 1984. Following these stations also means embarking on a journey through Uwe Johnson's work: to the rivers, lakes, and seas that shape his novel "Mutmassungen über Jakob" as well as the grand epic "Jahrestage," to villages and cities that cluster around them. In her attempt to find a home, Frauke Meyer-Gosau locates Johnson's life and work in today's settings—and finds one.
