Product details

Elizabeth Anscombe's "An Introduction to Wittgenstein's Tractatus" is regarded as a groundbreaking introduction to Wittgenstein's early masterpiece. In the first six chapters, she provides the reader with a lucid insight into the picture theory of the proposition, with the theme of negation taking up a significant space. In the subsequent chapters, she addresses the relationship between signs and symbols, Wittgenstein's engagement with Gottlob Frege and Bertrand Russell, and—especially, but not exclusively—in chapters 9 and 10, she tackles more technical questions regarding formal concepts and the general form of propositions. The glossary placed at the beginning of the book proves to be particularly helpful for these chapters. The last two chapters deal with the topics of knowledge and certainty, as well as the philosophical consequences concerning mysticism and solipsism in Wittgenstein's work.
