Sarah Kofman has primarily been recognized in the German-speaking world as an art theorist. With the translation "Camera Obscura: On Ideology" presented here, a facet of Sarah Kofman's work that has only been marginally acknowledged until now becomes visible for the first time in German: Sarah Kofman as a thinker of the political. This text from 1973, which can be understood as the philosopher's only intervention in the debates surrounding Marxism in the 1970s, has hardly been noticed in the German-speaking world, while it has long been considered a classic in France and the USA. Building on her extensive metaphorological studies, she interrogates the history of thought in search of a hidden metaphor within her work: the metaphor of the Camera Obscura, around which ideology and ideology critique are organized, making it particularly suitable for this inquiry.
