In this work, which was to be his last, Guattari focused on the emergence of the "New." From his psychiatric work, he knew that new subjectivities can form when patients experience a psychosis. The axioms of the existing order are suspended here, just as they sometimes are in artistic creation. In both cases, changes are possible that cannot be reintegrated into the old order, as happens with neurotic avoidance strategies. Guattari develops a conceptual toolkit for changes in general from such exceptional situations. Even though he consistently avoided ontologizing schizophrenia and psychosis or, as he puts it, "making artists the new heroes of the revolution," his philosophical radicalism is hard to surpass. Guattari charts a philosophical path into the world after postmodernism.
