Mouffe impressively develops an alternative to the prevailing paradigms of liberal or consensus-oriented democratic theory. The further development of Antonio Gramsci's concept of hegemony by Mouffe and Laclau aims, without wanting to abandon the achievements of liberal institutions, at a radicalization of democracy: a stronger incorporation of the conflict dimension of political action, a return to the core concept of popular sovereignty, and an expansion of equality effects across as many social fields as possible while respecting plural forms of autonomy. With the elevation of feminist, ecological, or pacifist demands within a socialist, emancipatory project, a consequential paradox arises: the project becomes one of radical and simultaneously plural democracy.
