Product details

Lacan does not understand ethics as the virtue of an intact ego-subject that psychoanalysis should aim to strengthen, but rather as an engagement with the paradoxical universe of guilt, which Freud introduced at the very beginning of his career with the idea of the Oedipal patricide. In "Totem and Taboo" (1913), Freud already demonstrated how the function of the superego, feelings of guilt, and the role of the father contribute to the creation of culture, thereby making individuals socially viable and interchangeable. Ethics is built upon this foundation. The "sublimation" understood in this way is not merely a supporting concept of a trivial cultural theory, but an eminent, tragic occurrence in psychoanalytic theory and practice. From this theme, a broad, complex field must be traversed, in which Lacan moves from Aristotle to Kant and de Sade, ultimately returning to Greek tragedy - Sophocles' Antigone.
