What language emerges when about twenty individuals interact with each other? A 5th-grade class in Widnau, a village in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley, and their language use and knowledge of local lexical elements are the focus of this study. Using two playful instruments, language use and knowledge will be assessed. Additionally, the students will be asked about their linguistic background, their mutual relationships, and their attitudes towards the local dialect. The aim is to explore whether and to what extent there is a connection between linguistic roots or the self-chosen social environment and language use or language knowledge. Based on the findings, various hypotheses will be made regarding the causes of linguistic convergence among interactants.
