This volume contains the two most famous case studies of the founder of psychoanalysis: the "Rat Man," written in 1909, and the "Wolf Man," recorded in 1914 but published only in 1918. The former owes his pseudonym to a sadistic obsession, referencing an Oriental punishment involving rats; the latter received his nickname due to a characteristic fear of wolves. Both patients, suffering from severe neurosis, were young men: the "Rat Man" was a lawyer, while the "Wolf Man" was a Russian landowner. In the treatment of the "Rat Man," Freud gained deep insights into the mechanisms of obsessions and compulsions, the conflict of ambivalence—namely, the struggle between love and hate—and the magical belief in the "omnipotence of thoughts."
