Product details

The description of standard language types is a recurring desideratum in standardology. The collected volume edited by Daniel Müller and Monika Wingender addresses current developments as well as methodological and theoretical aspects of Slavic standard languages in ten contributions. In the first part of the volume, standard language features are theoretically and methodologically discussed based on a model that defines types as interwoven gradable characteristics and the correlations between them. This is empirically examined using two prototypical Slavic standard languages: the monocentric standard language Russian and Croatian, which has emerged from the pluricentric standard language concept of Serbo-Croatian. The second part places these aspects in a broader methodological and conceptual context and presents further case studies on Russian and the successor languages of Serbo-Croatian. While the contributions regarding Russian primarily address questions of norm and usage, the current dynamics of the standard language norm, and newer trends in grammatical norms, the contributions on Serbo-Croatian and its successor languages focus on issues of variance, the characterization of idioms as independent languages or variants, as well as pluricentricity and the relationship between language, politics, and religion.
