Primarily developed in the USA and England, the Internet made its global breakthrough with the World Wide Web and email services. As new as the web medium is, it is heavily burdened by a metaphor that defines its free, new (media) type: the page metaphor. Documents on the web are referred to as pages and adopt various characteristics from the print medium. However, this approach to the medium overlooks some of its novel opportunities and possibilities. This paper contributes to the definition of the web type by presenting the history and interpretation of this metaphor, as well as discussing the page metaphor and new developments in web design that have emerged since the advent of smartphones and similar devices. Although this definition cannot be clearly established, the work expands and questions the fundamental properties of the web and critically engages with the existing page metaphor to create an approach to the web that is as innovative as the medium itself. A tool with such an approach was conceptualized and visualized in the practical part of the work using semantic technologies.
