More and more people of all ages place special value on tranquility and authenticity during their active leisure time. An increasing number of places in the Alps recognize their true values behind apparent economic weaknesses and do not see their future in alpine party tourism. For several years now, the Austrian Alpine Club has been awarding the label "Bergsteigerdorf" to villages in the Austrian Alps that have a rich mountaineering tradition, offer a great, authentic potential for mountain tours, and have always been committed to gentle tourism. Vent in the Ötztal, Villgraten in East Tyrol, and Johnsbach in the Gesäuse are just three of a total of 20 places that carry the label.
