Product details

While the origin of the strong preterite in the Germanic languages is fully understood, the ancestry of the weak preterite remains shrouded in dense darkness. The previously widely accepted view of Grimm and Bopp, that it originated from a combination of the verbal stem with the perfect of the root "do," has gradually been abandoned since Begemann challenged it with compelling arguments in his two works "The Weak Preterite of the Germanic Languages" and "On the Meaning of the Weak Preterite of the Germanic Languages." However, a universally satisfying explanation for the origin of this peculiar preterite formation has yet to be achieved. For it is not only the dental that demands clarification: the endings are also so peculiar that no analogy for them has yet been found.
