Language, myth, knowledge, technology: Cassirer's project aims to extend beyond the framework established by Kant towards a critical theory of modern culture. The concept of symbolic form serves to bridge the gap between a logic-centered and a social-theoretical philosophy. This is demonstrated by the contributions in this volume, which are based on lectures from an international conference held in Zurich in the fall of 1986; they provide a representative cross-section of contemporary Cassirer research.
