Starting with van Gogh, we are all, no matter how great we may be, to a certain extent self-taught - one could almost say naive painters. Painters no longer live within a tradition, and so each of us must recreate all our means of expression. Every modern painter has the complete right to invent this language from A to Z. No criterion can be applied to him a priori, because we no longer believe in strict standards. In a certain sense, this is a liberation, but at the same time, it is an enormous limitation, because when the individuality of the artist begins to express itself, he loses what he gains in freedom in terms of order. And when you are no longer able to submit to an order, then it is essentially a dangerous disadvantage.
