In addition to various styles of West African pop music known internationally under the label Highlife, musical genres such as Dansuom and Nnwomkor also emerged in Ghana during the 20th century. Their melodic and lyrical structures prove to be largely stable compared to older songs from the Asante region of Ghana. After presenting the historical and social dimensions of the genres, the study focuses on examining the processes of interactive engagement and individual expression that complement the percussive instrumental accompaniment of the pieces. It can be shown that the individual personal style stands alongside the general characteristics of the genre. This work includes a DVD with 30 music examples.
