Employee assignments have significant importance in the context of the globalization of markets and companies. Central to the success of assignments is the adaptation of expatriate families to the culture of the host country. Melanie Wortmann examines the daily experiences and typical challenges faced by American expatriate families in Germany through qualitative interviews. Taking into account existing findings from international management, acculturation, and expatriate research, she describes a critical adjustment phase as well as a necessary level of adaptation for assignment success. The author also provides practical recommendations for assignment management.
