The public space serves important functions for young people as a place of socialization and identity development. However, public space is contested, as it is where the expectations and interests of various user groups intersect. While young people lack opportunities for influence in the planning and design of their living environments, actors in youth work and planning respond to the contested public space with different, not always consistent approaches. The book illuminates the contexts of emergence and effects of contested public space and shows ways to involve young people in the planning and design of public spaces. By referring to specific approaches and projects, it takes into account the perspectives of various actors (youth work, urban planning, politics).
