On one hand, the number of people in the Federal Republic who need assistance is increasing, while on the other hand, the number of those willing to provide this help voluntarily is decreasing. Studies have shown that neither inquiry commissions nor reform concepts have been able to change this. Perhaps it would be helpful to learn more practical information about volunteer work from both those affected and the volunteers themselves. How did someone come to their volunteer position? What was the motivation? What is helpful, and what is hindering? What is enjoyable, and what is dreadful? What do those affected wish for? What do they find inappropriate? What is going well, and what is going wrong? In particular, many who hesitate to get involved may be unaware that all parties give and take, and how much satisfaction both sides derive from this exchange.
