Product details

With empathy and reverence, Sewak reflects on the historical past of his people, which is both filled with suffering and glorious. He dedicates his greatest lyrical work to the saddest side of Armenia. However, love poetry occupies an extraordinary place in the poet's works. Parujr Sewak creates a unique world of love, rich in revelations and discoveries. He expresses every feeling, from deep longing to the pain of his insomnia. He considers himself fortunate to love, yet simultaneously counts the days until their reunion. The poems gathered and translated in this volume encompass themes of love, homeland, the world, humanity, and nature. The feelings and philosophical thoughts that are deeply characteristic of Parujr Sewak flow from the poems in this book. Parujr Sewak (his original family name was Ghasarjan) was born on January 24, 1924, in Tchanakhtchí, now Sangakatun. By the age of eleven, he was writing what he called calendar poems (January 1, March 8, May 1, November 7) at school. From 1940 to 1945, Sewak studied at the Faculty of Philology at Yerevan State University. His first poems were published in 1942 in the magazine Soviet Literature and Art. His first book, The Immortals Command, was released in 1948. In 1953, he published Unpeaceful Friendship, in 1954 The Path of Love, and in 1957 Again with You; further publications followed. Sewak was not only a poet but also a literary scholar, literary critic, prose writer, essayist, translator, and screenwriter. Parujr Sewak passed away on June 17, 1971, and is today the most popular poet in Armenia.
