Feeling inadequate for a task or fearing a challenge is not unusual. However, many people live with the belief that their success is a mere fluke, that the praise from colleagues only reflects their ignorance, and that compliments are not sincere but merely well-intentioned. In short, they see themselves as frauds and, despite all evidence to the contrary, are firmly convinced that they are complete failures. This phenomenon is known as Impostor Syndrome: the inability to attribute success to one's own abilities and talents. Those affected consider themselves impostors and live in constant fear of being exposed. While it was once thought that primarily women suffered from this, it is now known that both genders are equally affected, and the phenomenon spans all educational levels and cultural backgrounds.
