The medievalist and philologist Hugo Gering presents in this volume the songs of the Elder Edda that were written down in the 13th century. His translation of the Old Icelandic songs of gods and heroes is accompanied by an extensive commentary that provides the reader with a deeper insight into the connections, thereby facilitating the understanding of the mythological motifs. Furthermore, Gering's work includes an appendix to the Snorra-Edda. This is a carefully edited reprint of the original edition from 1892.
