A historical and geographical representation of the island of Mainau and the Bodensee region. The history of Mainau Island is eventful, and clear evidence of settlement exists only from the 13th century. After several changes of ownership, the island was donated to the Teutonic Order in 1272. During the Thirty Years' War, Mainau was occupied by Swedish troops and heavily devastated. In the 18th century, construction of the church and the palace began. Grand Duke Friedrich I established the Grand Ducal Baden Court Garden on the island starting in 1853. Alongside Konstanz, Meersburg and Überlingen are among the largest towns on Lake Constance.
