When dealing with the person Ernst Henrici, one cannot help but view him critically. In particular, his development into an anti-Semite cannot and must not be glossed over. On the other hand, there was also Henrici, the colonial adventurer, who spent some time in the former German colony of Togo. He failed as a planter, but the effort he made to learn the African language Ephe (also Ewe) deserves recognition. The result is the work presented here. Henrici created a textbook that introduces African languages and explains the peculiarities of their grammar. He provides exercises on dialects and varieties of the Ephe language and presents a dictionary section. This is a carefully edited reprint of the original edition from 1891.
