Arcanjo, the last son of a famous dynasty of big game hunters, sets out to a village plagued by man-eating lions. He is accompanied by a chatty wannabe writer, who is tasked by an international oil company, concerned about its investments in the region, to write a report on the situation. Gradually, Arcanjo uncovers the dark secrets of the village community: the women are victims of brutal traditions, including Mariamar, Arcanjo's former lover. His own life in the distant capital is in ruins. He loves Luzilia, his brother's wife. One night, the village is attacked by lions again - and Arcanjo learns that nothing around him is as he had imagined.
