Ten-year-old Raj lives in a poor village on the edge of the sugarcane plantations of Mauritius, at the mercy of his father's violence after his two brothers die in an accident. When he meets his peer David, it seems as if he has finally found a friend and brother again. However, David is a Jewish refugee with his family, deported to the colony by the British mandate and imprisoned in a facility where Raj's father works as a guard. When David finally manages to escape, the two friends decide to run away together. An odyssey begins. It is only when Raj confronts his memories years later that he learns the true story of his friend and his family.
