In his speech for the Nobel Prize award, Mahfouz referred to himself as a descendant of the pharaonic civilization. In this novel, he turns to Ancient Egypt. A few decades after Akhenaten's death, the young historian Merimun embarks on a quest for the truth. He interviews fourteen eyewitnesses about their experiences: generals, priests, artists, close confidants, and family members share their stories with him. In their accounts, following Akhenaten's downfall and the defeat of the utopia, hatred and quiet admiration coexist closely. Ultimately, Merimun also reaches Nefertiti. Confined by the new rulers in a crumbling palace, she becomes aware of her betrayal of her great love.
