In August 1978, a four-member delegation from the Swedish-Cambodian Friendship Society traveled to Democratic Kampuchea. They reported on a sense of renewal and happy people, even though they were traveling through a country whose population was oppressed, exploited, and murdered by Pol Pot's regime. Peter Fröberg Idling attempts to understand the coexistence of these different truths. He travels through libraries, archives, and to Cambodia, seeking out those who traveled at that time, as well as Cambodian perpetrators, bystanders, and victims. His literary report raises questions: Did they not want to understand back then? Were doubts suppressed in the service of an ideology? But also: What can I know today, or what is it that I do not see?.
