Product details

From March 1942 to the fall of 1943, 1.5 million Jews, most of whom were former Polish citizens, were deported by train to the Nazi extermination camps of Treblinka, Belzec, and Sobibor, where they were murdered. Contrary to the stereotype, they did not go like sheep to the slaughter, but instead put up various forms of resistance. Once the true purpose of the camps became known, many Jews prepared to escape and jumped from the fast-moving and heavily guarded death trains at great personal risk. This book is based on the biographies of those who jumped and survived. It provides insight into the conditions of escape and its execution, the situation in the train cars, and survival during the long period until the end of the war—whether in hiding, with partisans, or disguised as Christian Poles.
