Captain Werner was severely wounded in the Caucasus. Although he was classified as unfit for combat, he managed to be sent to the Kuban region near Krasnodar. Following the collapse of the 6th Army at Stalingrad, a retreat from the Caucasus was ordered. Captain Werner knows that this could mean death and destruction. In the chaotic conditions, he loses contact with the German front line. Under the furious attacks of the Red Army, the Wehrmacht units retreat, leaving their allied Cossacks at the mercy of Stalin's vengeance. Their hope is the bridgehead at Kuban - but before they can reach it, the fate of countless German and Russian soldiers is sealed.
