Knowledge of the development of our script, at least in its basic outlines, is a prerequisite for anyone who wants to use historical sources in their original form. This publication takes into account all significant stages of script development and provides a coherent overview of the evolution of our script, starting from its Roman foundations through the Romanesque, Gothic, and Baroque periods to the threshold of the present day. Numerous carefully selected examples of scripts accompany the text and are separately reproduced in the appendix, complementing the depiction of a roughly 2000-year development shaped by various influences. Special emphasis has been placed on considering the characteristic dynamics of each individual letter; therefore, in addition to the script examples, letter alphabets with corresponding explanations have been included.
