Product details
Ryad is tasked with emptying an old bookstore in Algiers. What he discovers is a historic, unique place: this is where Edmond Charlot (1915-2004) operated, who founded a thriving center for books in 1936 with Les Vraies Richesses, serving as a library, publishing house, and meeting point all in one. He discovered Albert Camus and other literary giants of the 20th century, tirelessly advocating for literature. During World War II, he was called "the publisher of free France," with authors from around the world coming and going. He survived imprisonment under the Vichy regime, paper shortages, financial difficulties, and two bombing attempts. Kaouther Adimi's award-winning novel pays tribute to literature and an outstanding patron. With sensitivity and realism, she sketches moments from Charlot's tumultuous life through his fictional diary.
