In 1943, young officer Martin Mahner plays tennis in white flannel on the Riviera. He hasn't seen his girlfriend from his time in Paris, Maria, since their violent separation four years ago. She now lives with her little daughter Alicia in a small town in Rhineland-Palatinate, where she has found work and a home. The war seems to be just an ugly background noise. But the idyll is fragile, as the Gestapo is searching the town for the creators of anti-Nazi flyers. And those are all too familiar to Maria...
