The theme of subordination plays a significant role in the Christian church, particularly in its view of marriage, but not only there. In every interaction among people, the question of the distribution of power, of claims and justifications of one person's authority over another, is of crucial importance. Nevertheless, this topic is rarely reflected upon in congregations and is often treated like a taboo. Due to established traditions, there is a lack of a factual approach to the concept and application of power in preaching, ministry, and the social behavior of the church, which can lead to abuse often being either not recognized as such or trivialized, reinterpreted, and spiritualized. The theological maneuvers, sophisticated interpretations of biblical passages, and the sacred claims to authority by leaders or organizations can sometimes be downright alarming.
