Norbert Scheuer's art of distilling the poetic everyday life from seemingly small people and things, moods and landscapes of the province began with poetry. Laconic and precise, expressing a fine and uncompromising perception that neither beautifies nor idealizes, and does not shy away from history or technique, the observations and impressions, thoughts and epiphanies in these poems are enveloped in love. The materiality of a sometimes rural and small-town world transforms into the ethereal, nature appears animated, yet remains entirely itself. The density and conciseness of this poetry, its stillness and thingness, its proximity to everyday life, and its sensitivity to history, which expands into natural history, inevitably evoke the great American poet William Carlos Williams, whose poems are one of Scheuer's models.
