Looking out of the window, Sophia sees her mother's body hanging from the big chestnut tree and her father lying in a pool of his own blood. The police suspect an attempted murder-suicide. Sophia needs to clear her mother's name, and to do this, she wades into her murky past, discovering that the woman she thought she knew was involved in sinister events that have thrown a shadow over her own life.
