Product details

It comes down to the heartbeat! Not the words themselves, no, but the language around them - that's where the crux lies. Words do not make God's Word holy; the heartbeat must do that. So said Johannes Jessen (1880-1945) in a commemorative publication in 1941. Jessen's Bible translation saw its 9th edition in the Old Testament and the 11th in the New Testament in 2006. This is truly unique and has its good reasons. The present monograph traces the life path of Johannes Jessen, explores the distinctiveness of his Low German preaching in the 1920s, which does not rest on the notions of homeland, blood, and soil. It leads to the principles of his Low German Bible translation. It shows that the Low German preacher and Bible translator Jessen followed his own theological paths. He explicitly justified his translation method. In close proximity to the Hebrew and Greek original texts, he captured the essence of the Low German language and translated the texts into Low German. This sets him apart from the circle of contemporary Low German Bible translators and preachers, granting him lasting significance.
