In our modern Western culture, grief often has no proper place, even though the need to mourn is being rediscovered. Despite a flood of literature and many support groups, there is significant uncertainty in dealing with questions related to grief: Can I 'afford' to grieve? Is grief not a sign of weakness? Can I share my grief, or must I cope with it alone? Can I 'learn' to grieve? How and for how long should I grieve? How can I overcome and transform my grief? One of the mysteries associated with grief is that through experiencing it, transformation occurs, leading to a deeper understanding of life—both one's own and the larger connection between the earthly and the divine. Ultimately, grief and the pain that resides within it prove to be benefactors of humanity.
