The present draft of a critical theory of nursing science questions the existing conditions and the validity of previous practices. By conceptualizing a normatively rich notion of nursing action that overcomes the one-sidedness of previous theoretical approaches, the author assigns a socially critical function to nursing. Starting from fundamental positions on science and the theory discourse in nursing, and engaging critically with these, he analyzes the two fields of practice: intensive care and home care. He reconstructs the hidden forms of knowledge in nursing and presents a theoretical classification of nursing science. The work concludes with suggestions for greater societal involvement in the development of science and a closer alignment of theory and practice.
