Product details

Yiddish-speaking cultural creators, inspired by the October Revolution of 1917, believed in the realization of a socialist-national utopia in the Soviet Union. With Yiddish as their national language, they contributed to the establishment of a socially just society in the socialist sense. This Yiddish-Soviet cultural concept was characterized by processes of transfer, contradictions, and breaks.

Through three literary phenomena, the volume presents a heterogeneous picture of the activities of Yiddish-speaking cultural creators. Literary programs and manifestos formed a theoretical foundation for their project. In fictional texts, the proclamations made in the manifestos were implemented. In translations and translation criticism, cultural encounters, differences, and heterogeneity were reflected upon.

Despite the state's enforced expressions of loyalty, the Yiddish-Soviet culture of the 1920s remained authentic in its claims, heterogeneous in its form, and transnational in its essence. Thus, the volume contradicts the seemingly homogeneous image of a Sovietized Yiddish-speaking culture.
