Volunteer hospice companions listen to questions from seriously ill individuals, the dying, and their loved ones, such as: "What have I done to deserve this?", "Nothing makes sense anymore!", "I don't want to live anymore!" or "I don't want to die yet!". Many of these statements are also inquiries about spirituality, hope and meaning, faith and disbelief, God, or a concept of life after death. How can we prevent hospice companions from being overwhelmed by such expressions or acting naively? How can we address the tendency for companions to project their own spirituality or religiosity onto those they accompany? In a pluralistic and multicultural society, it is especially important for hospice care to recognize that spirituality is defined by the individual. Training for volunteers promotes acceptance and mindfulness in dealing with those affected.
