As early as 1969, John Bowlby, the founder of attachment theory, emphasized that an interdisciplinary perspective is essential for exploring developmental and change processes in humans. This included his original psychoanalytic approach, the empirical perspective of behavioral researchers, and the systemic paradigm. He considered the knowledge base of these ways of thinking and acting fundamental for a deeper understanding of the connection between biological survival patterns and the ongoing modification of these patterns through human communication, starting with the very early mother-child relationship. Fifty years of neurobiological, attachment, and resilience research have impressively confirmed this assumption. System theory and systemic practice developed powerfully over approximately the same time span.
