Many chronically depressed individuals have experienced early and multiple traumas. Early traumas are retained in the body as "embodied memories" and often unconsciously influence thinking, feeling, and behavior. Therefore, these "embodied memories" form a key in the transference relationship with the analyst, allowing for a gradual and precise understanding of the specific traumas suffered by a patient, which has proven to be an essential prerequisite for their psychological integration. As illustrated by two detailed case studies, psychoanalytic treatments can not only lead individuals out of depression but also reduce the likelihood of passing on traumas and depression to the next generation.
