Humans are biological beings. Consequently, all psychological phenomena arise within a biological structure, namely that of the brain. However, those who conclude that psychological impairments can be explained by a simple increase or decrease of dopamine or serotonin in the synaptic gap are mistaken, as the functioning of the neural structure is far too complex and interactive to be explained with a straightforward "If A, then B." Highly complex psychological impairments and disorders also result from an internal struggle of the individual with themselves, overshadowed by questions of meaning. Thus, both pure biologists and those professionals who advocate for a human spirit independent of neural processes fail to grasp the complicated interplay between brain physiology on one hand and the cultural, thus psychosocial, aspects on the other.
